In the latest edition of our monthly psychobitesize we examine sleep - what it is, why we need it and how it can affect our efficiency at work...

Sleep is a natural state of bodily rest observed in all animals, in some form or another. For humans and for the majority of other animals, sleep is essential for survival. In fact, it is possible to survive three times as long without food than without sleep.
 
In mammals and birds, sleep is divided into two broad types – REM (rapid eye movement) and NREM (non-rapid eye movement). Both types are important and occur at different times in the sleep cycle.  The average human sleep cycle lasts 90-110 minutes, with most sleep being NREM and a shorter period being REM.
