Binfield Banzai succumb to defeat on Wednesday night

Binfield Banzai succumbed to defeat in their first game in the Bracknell 6 a side league on Wednesday night. Spirits were high before kick off at the Theatre of Dreams (Bracknell Leisure Centre), with the Banzai’s looking the part in their new kit. The opponents were last year’s league winners who looked hungry to continue their rich vein of form.

The Banzai’s lined up: Will ‘the rock’ Barribal, Tom ‘wont track back’ Quayle, Olly ‘Bambi on ice’ Taylor, Simon ‘play maker’ Cooper, Colin ‘Hendry’ McKinnon and Roger ‘Maradona’ Philby. Mark ‘Makelele’ Swain was ready on the sideline to provide defensive stability and to run the show when required.

The game started at a fast pace with the Banzai’s chasing possession. The home team kept the ball well and managed to grab an early goal, however, far from capitulating, the Banzai’s held their heads high and started to knock the ball around well. Some moments of pure football genius ensued and chances were had. Philby was playing the Maradona role well (the football bit, not the drug abuse and fluctuating weight problem) and Cooper was beginning to pick passes that his Derby heroes would be proud of. The Banzai’s pressed but were vulnerable to the counter and lost a second goal before half time.

The second half continued in a similar fashion with some good football from the Banzai’s and perhaps if Taylor had bought his shooting boots, or sensible football boots for that matter, then the Banzai’s could have been right back in it. The rotation system was in full flow with Harry ‘Clough’ Philby sending on Swain to sure up the back. Swain put in a workman like performance next to McKinnon, however two quick goals for the home team gave the Banzai’s a mountain to climb. There was a glimmer of hope with a few minutes left when Quayle broke down the left before hammering the ball home, however it was too late and the Banzai’s eventually went down 4-1, a score that could have been a lot worse without the quality of Barribal in goal.

It was a valiant performance from the lads and they have picked themselves up and are ready for their first 3 points next week. Check back next week to find out how they got on….
